(Beatles with the kids)
From the journal of Derek Rury
I guess you know you've done something cool when you've played the guitar and sang a Beatles song with kids half way around the world from your home. They provided the beat, via hands and feet, and I provided the tune, via a miniature guitar we had to finagle away from the town doctor. But what we produced was emotioanlly electrifying. It is one of those things that is expinentially more powerful in real life than how you imagined it in your mind. To be in that moment, feeling more alive than ever before. To put into motion and idea. To live an ideal. To fulfill a dream. And all it took was a Ticket to Ride.

Sounds amazing. Good thing you practiced that song so often before you left =)
Can't wait to read more! miss u
Derek! I am enjoying reading your posts so much (and also looking forward to posts about that public sexual act business). Interesting. Things are good here. My little patio garden is growing well. Your brother and I went camping in Indiana this past weekend and saw Radiohead. Best show, seriously, I ever did see. So good. Aaron put up some video on facebook from the show. Billy & Amanda are coming for a visit this weekend and we are planning on renting a boat and fishing as much as we can if the weather is nice. I'm trying to work hard and finish up the survey component of my dissertation so I can get it out into the field by September. The sooner I get that going, the sooner I can leave for my fieldwork in Mexico. I have been sticking to my workout plan. I'm just focusing on short-term attainable goals and eating right. I'm loving not having a car. Riding my bike everywhere is a lot of fun and built in cardio! Your host family seems lovely. Please tell them your sister-in-law feels so blessed that you are being taken care of so well by them. We miss you and love you and can't wait to hear more about Beloha! xoxo, Lauren
Really enjoying the blog, Derek!
Between your accounts and my brother's Zambia blog, I feel like I'm living in Africa.
Oh wait - we have electicity and flushing toilets...never mind :-)
Bet those rabid dogs make the German Shepherds of Bucktown/Wicker Park seem like fluffy little bunny rabbits :-)
Hey -- the pug misses you. Haven't checked your posts in a while because I didn't think you'd be online, but now I'm all caught up. Love hearing about your journey and you are an awesome writer-- you should know that you are providing a really cool bridge between our worlds...really great for everyone at home.
Ernie has a few new gray hairs on his chin since you left. He's also snoring so loudly right now that I had to crank up the tv to watch the olympics. You'd crack up if you could hear it. It's crabapple season, so he's been hunting for those on a daily basis as well as adding to our exploding rock collection. Laura has gotten used to his crazy habits, I think...but he still finds ways to test and surprise her. Summer is flying by, but I'm trying to soak it all up as much as possible, and hoping to get in a great trip by the end of the year. Maybe Thailand at Christmas. Stay in touch, and we'll do the same. We're sending you lots of great vibes from Chicago -Love Jess & ernie.
"Mordor Gandalf...is it left or right?"
